RSHE

Relationships, Sex and Health Education

From September 2020, the Department for Education requires all schools to implement statutory Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) as part of their Personal, Social and Health Education curriculum. To prepare for this, we have worked with the Diocese of Leeds and sought guidance from the Catholic Education Service.

The curriculum focuses on healthy relationships and keeping children safe in the modern world. It also covers a wide range of topics relating to physical and mental health, wellbeing, safeguarding and positive relationships. Learning about the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up provides young people with the information, skills and values needed to build safe and fulfilling relationships, while helping them take responsibility for their own wellbeing.

Ten Ten Resources

The resources used to deliver the RSHE curriculum are provided by Ten Ten, a Catholic education organisation. The Catholic Education Service has endorsed the use of Ten Ten resources in secondary schools. Their programme includes videos and presentations designed to promote discussion and inform students about RSHE topics. Each resource is rooted in scripture and reflects the teachings of the Catholic Church while also acknowledging other world views as required within the statutory framework.

Right to Withdraw

Parents and carers continue to have the right to withdraw their child from the Sex Education element of RSHE up to three terms before their child’s sixteenth birthday, except for those elements which are part of the Science National Curriculum. Should parents or carers wish to withdraw their child, they are asked to notify the school by contacting office@sjfchs.org.uk.

We encourage anyone considering withdrawing their child to discuss any concerns with the Headteacher. There is no right to withdraw a child from the Relationships Education element of RSHE.
